It is more than a nursing home conversation
Long-term care helps with ongoing personal needs caused by illness, disability, or cognitive impairment. Depending on the policy, covered care may be at home, in assisted living, an adult day program, or a nursing facility. Insurance benefits and eligible caregivers vary.
Medicare and Medigap generally do not pay for ongoing custodial care. Medicare can cover qualifying skilled care under specific conditions; that is different from extended help with everyday activities.

Life insurance paired with long-term care benefits. Review how using care benefits affects the death benefit, what remains for beneficiaries, and which values and premiums are guaranteed.
Some annuities offer long-term care features. A nursing-home withdrawal waiver or enhanced income feature is not automatically comprehensive LTC insurance. Read the contract and rider.
Personal savings and income can also be part of the funding plan. Medicaid may help eligible people, subject to state financial and care requirements. We compare insurance in the context of your overall resources; an attorney or tax professional can address legal and tax questions.
Care terms, made clear
The six activities of daily living are bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, continence, and transferring—such as moving between a bed and chair.
For federally tax-qualified care, the chronic-illness standard includes practitioner certification of needing substantial help with at least two ADLs for at least 90 days, or substantial supervision because of severe cognitive impairment. A prescribed plan of care and policy requirements also matter. This is not an automatic claim approval or a universal 90-day waiting period.
This is the waiting period before eligible benefits begin. Ask whether the contract counts calendar days or days receiving care, what must happen first, and who pays during that period.
The daily or monthly benefit limits payments over that interval; the benefit pool or period limits total available coverage. Inflation protection can increase benefits over time under its formula. It does not guarantee that every future care bill will be covered.
Reimbursement typically pays eligible documented expenses up to policy limits. Cash or indemnity designs may pay a stated amount after benefit conditions are met. Documentation and payment rules still apply.
Both can provide access to benefits while living, but qualifying conditions, payout calculations, charges, and permitted uses can differ. An accelerated death benefit generally reduces what remains for beneficiaries. Compare the actual rider—not just the phrase “living benefits.”
No. A qualifying Long-Term Care Partnership policy can offer asset-disregard protections under applicable rules, but you still must meet Medicaid eligibility requirements. Ask a qualified professional about your circumstances before making asset transfers or coverage changes.

Coverage commonly requires health underwriting. Age and health affect eligibility and cost; approval is not guaranteed. If care is already needed, ask about available community resources and existing benefits rather than assuming a new policy can cover that need.
Compare current local care quotes, your preferred setting, available income, accessible savings, and the amount of care you would self-fund. No single national average or benefit amount fits every household.
Tax treatment depends on the contract and your circumstances. Qualified premiums may receive limited favorable treatment; do not assume every hybrid premium is deductible or every benefit has identical tax treatment. Review the current rules with your tax professional.
