New to Medicare? Let’s Start With the Basics

Medicare is the federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 or older. Certain people under 65 may also qualify because of a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease or another qualifying condition.

Medicare has several different parts, and each one serves a different purpose:

Medicare Part A: Hospital Insurance

Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and certain home health services.

Medicare Part B: Medical Insurance

Part B generally helps cover medically necessary services from doctors and other healthcare providers, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment and certain home health services.

Together, Part A and Part B are known as Original Medicare. Original Medicare covers many healthcare services, but it does not cover every cost. It also generally does not include routine prescription-drug coverage. Medicare explains how Original Medicare works.

Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. They provide Part A and Part B benefits and may include prescription-drug coverage and other benefits.

Plan premiums, provider networks, formularies, copayments and benefits can vary by plan and service area. That makes it important to look beyond an advertisement and examine how a plan may work with your doctors, prescriptions and healthcare needs.

Medicare Part D: Prescription-Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D helps cover prescription medications. Coverage is available through a stand-alone Medicare drug plan or through many Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage.

Each plan may have its own formulary, pharmacy network and cost-sharing structure. A plan that works well for one person may not be the right fit for another—even when they live in the same Palm Beach County community.

Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Supplement Insurance, commonly called Medigap, is private insurance designed to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs left by Original Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.

Medigap works with Original Medicare. It is not the same as Medicare Advantage, and you cannot use both types of coverage together.

Two Main Paths Through Medicare

Once you have Medicare Part A and Part B, you generally have two primary ways to receive your Medicare coverage.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. You may also consider:

  • A stand-alone Part D prescription-drug plan

  • Medicare Supplement Insurance

  • Separate dental, vision or hearing coverage

Original Medicare generally allows you to visit any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage

A Medicare Advantage plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare. Many plans also include prescription-drug coverage and may offer additional benefits.

These plans may use provider networks and may have different rules, costs and coverage limitations.

So, Which Direction Is Right for You?

There is no universal answer—and that is precisely the point.

The right direction may depend on:

  • Your doctors, specialists and preferred hospitals

  • Your prescription medications

  • How frequently you travel

  • Your preferred pharmacies

  • Your budget and comfort with out-of-pocket costs

  • Your eligibility for financial assistance

  • The plan options available in your Palm Beach County ZIP code

We help you examine those details before discussing available coverage—not after you enroll.

A Local Medicare Conversation, Not a National Call Center

Palm Beach County is wonderfully diverse. Some residents live here year-round. Others divide their time between Florida and another state. Some want a broad choice of providers, while others prefer a coordinated local healthcare network.

That is why Medicare guidance should begin with your life—not with a generic sales script.
