Three questions before you decide

01 / COVERAGE

Is it from current work?

Group coverage through your or your spouse’s current employment may let you delay Part B without a late penalty. Ask the benefits administrator to confirm.

02 / COORDINATION

Who pays first?

For age-based Medicare, employers with fewer than 20 employees generally have different payment rules. Your plan may require Part A and Part B. Verify before delaying.

03 / TIMING

When does work or coverage end?

The usual Part B special enrollment window lasts eight months after employment or qualifying coverage ends, whichever happens first. Arrange coverage before the old plan ends.

The details worth slowing down for

Does COBRA buy me more time?

COBRA does not extend the Part B enrollment deadline. Retiree coverage also is not the same as coverage through current employment. Check your Medicare timing before accepting either.

What if I contribute to an HSA?

Once enrolled in Medicare, you cannot contribute to an HSA. Employer contributions count too. Premium-free Part A can be retroactive when you enroll after 65, affecting earlier contribution months. Ask Social Security and your tax professional to coordinate dates before applying for Medicare or Social Security benefits.

Can I still use money already in my HSA?

Yes. Existing HSA funds remain available for qualified medical expenses. If you are 65 or older, certain Medicare premiums can qualify; Medigap premiums generally do not. IRS rules determine the tax treatment.

Should I automatically drop my employer plan?

Compare the full picture first: premiums, providers, prescriptions, out-of-pocket costs, and coverage for a spouse or dependents. Ask your benefits administrator what happens if you leave or later want to return. Medicare eligibility alone does not make one choice right for everyone.
