IRMAA & retirement • Palm Beach County

Retiring or retired?
Your Medicare premium may need a second look.

Less work. Different income. Time to check the details. A qualifying life change may allow Social Security to review your Medicare income surcharge.

A surcharge, made clearer

What is IRMAA?

IRMAA means Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount: an additional charge some people pay for Medicare Part B and Part D. It is based on income—not how often you visit a doctor.

Social Security generally uses tax information from two years earlier. If your premium reflects your working years, a qualifying life change and reduced income may support a new review.

When might a review help?

Retirement or reduced work can qualify when the resulting income reduction affects your IRMAA. Other examples include marriage, divorce, and the death of a spouse. Check SSA’s full event definitions and documentation rules.

What does MAGI mean here?

For Medicare IRMAA, modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) generally means your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest. Ask your tax professional to help identify or estimate the figures SSA requests.

A lower income alone does not automatically qualify under the life-changing-event rules. SSA reviews your circumstances and makes the determination.

Notice. Documents. Review.

Three steps toward a clearer answer.

01 / CHECK

Read your notice.

Identify the premium year, tax year, and income information SSA used. Keep the notice and follow its instructions.

02 / GATHER

Prepare your information.

Gather evidence of the qualifying event, your tax filing status, and the income information or estimates requested by the form.

03 / REQUEST

Contact Social Security.

Use the official SSA service or follow the SSA-44 instructions for submitting the form and evidence. Approval and any reduction depend on your circumstances.

Your IRMAA conversation checklist.

Check items as you gather them. These checkmarks do not submit or save information.

Provide supporting documents directly through SSA’s official process. Do not upload tax returns, Social Security numbers, or financial account details to an HPB snapshot or scheduling form.

Know which door to use

A request for review is not always an appeal.

Is SSA-44 the form for every disagreement?

No. A qualifying life-changing-event request asks for a new determination. Disagreeing with a decision or correcting tax information can involve a different process. Follow the instructions and deadlines in your notice; SSA-44 is not a universal appeal form.

What if I filed an amended tax return?

SSA directs people with an amended return to contact Social Security about lowering IRMAA. Use SSA’s official instructions ↗ rather than assuming a life-changing-event form is the right route.

Can HPB approve or guarantee a reduction?

No. Social Security decides IRMAA requests. Our Palm Beach County team can explain how Medicare costs fit your coverage conversation and identify questions to take to SSA or your tax professional.
