Government assistance

Extra Help / LIS

Helps eligible people with limited income and resources pay Part D premiums, deductibles, and prescription costs. Some people qualify automatically through full Medicaid, SSI, or a Medicare Savings Program. Others can apply through Social Security.

Medicare Savings Programs

These state programs may help pay Medicare premiums and, for some eligible people, other Medicare cost sharing. They are different from a private insurance discount. Ask Florida DCF to screen you for the appropriate program.

Florida Medicaid

Medicaid eligibility depends on your circumstances and the program. Having Medicare does not automatically rule it out. Use Florida’s official MyACCESS portal to apply; the state makes eligibility decisions.

Costco prescription pricing

Compare your insurance price with any eligible Costco member price for the exact prescription. Member-value pricing cannot be combined with an insurance claim, including Medicare. Membership does not guarantee the lowest price or preferred pharmacy status. Ask the pharmacist which option applies.

Prescription Payment Plan

Spreads out-of-pocket costs for covered Part D drugs across the calendar year. It does not reduce your total drug costs. Compare assistance programs first and ask your drug plan whether spreading payments would help.

Use the benefits you already have.

MAPD means Medicare Advantage with prescription drug coverage. Extra benefits vary by plan, location, eligibility, and year. Check the Evidence of Coverage and call the member-services number on your card before spending or booking services.

OTC: what can I buy, and when?

Some plans offer an allowance for approved over-the-counter items. Check the current catalog, approved stores or ordering service, balance, and spending deadline. Ask whether unused amounts roll over. Do not assume every item at a participating store is eligible.

Food, utilities, and “grocery cards”

These benefits are available only through certain plans and may require additional eligibility verification. Some are special supplemental benefits for chronically ill members; a diagnosis alone may not satisfy every requirement. Confirm eligibility, covered purchases, retailers, and expiration rules with the carrier. An OTC allowance does not automatically include groceries.

Official examples: UnitedHealthcare · Humana · Devoted Food & Home. Select the correct plan year on each website.

Dental, vision, and hearing

Before an appointment, confirm the provider’s participation in your exact plan, what is covered, benefit limits, authorization requirements, and your share of the cost. Ask for a written estimate. “Accepts the insurance company” does not always mean “in network for your plan.”

Transportation, meals, fitness, and rewards

Ask whether your plan includes any of these services. Check advance-booking rules, trip limits, qualifying events for meals, eligible fitness locations, and reward deadlines. Arrange services through the plan’s approved vendor when required.

Cigna Medicare is now HealthSpring.

The Medicare business formerly owned by The Cigna Group transitioned to the HealthSpring brand beginning January 1, 2026, under Health Care Service Corporation. This refers to that Medicare business—not all Cigna insurance. Use current member materials to find your plan’s resources.

Did you know?

Medicare has a story.

A presidential first.

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965. Former President Harry Truman received the first Medicare card.

Part D came much later.

Medicare began with Parts A and B. The optional Part D prescription drug benefit did not begin until 2006.

Future costs: useful scenarios, not predictions

If a hypothetical $1,000 annual expense rose by 3%, 5%, or 7% every year for ten years, it would become approximately $1,344, $1,629, or $1,967. These are compound-growth illustrations—not Medicare forecasts. Your premiums, health needs, benefits, laws, and assistance eligibility can change differently.

Review several scenarios and revisit your budget annually. Even official long-range Medicare projections involve uncertainty. Explore the Medicare Trustees reports.
