Temporary coverage • Important tradeoffs

Short-term medical insurance.
Mind the coverage gap.

Between jobs or waiting for another plan? Temporary insurance deserves a clear look at both what it may pay and what it leaves out.

Start with the distinction

A temporary policy has a different job.

Short-term, limited-duration insurance (STLDI) may help with certain unexpected medical expenses during a transition. It is not ACA-compliant comprehensive coverage and does not carry all Marketplace protections. Compare a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period, employer continuation options, and other eligible coverage first.

Health questions may apply.

An insurer may review your health history and decline an application. Pre-existing conditions are commonly excluded. Read the policy’s definition, including its look-back period.

Benefits can be narrower.

Maternity, mental health care, preventive services, and prescriptions may be excluded or limited. Dollar caps, waiting periods, and service-specific limits can leave additional bills.

Know the exit date.

Confirm the exact start date, expiration, renewal terms, and any new underwriting. Do not assume the policy can continue until your next enrollment opportunity.

Plan your next landing before takeoff.

Expiration of short-term coverage generally does not create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. You may have to wait for Open Enrollment unless another qualifying event applies. Short-term premiums do not qualify for ACA premium tax credits.

Terms that matter before you apply.

Exclusion vs. waiting period

An exclusion removes coverage for a specified condition or service. A waiting period delays when an otherwise eligible benefit becomes payable. An exclusion does not necessarily disappear after waiting.

Benefit maximum vs. out-of-pocket maximum

A benefit maximum caps what the insurer pays. An out-of-pocket maximum caps certain costs you pay under the policy’s rules. They point in opposite directions. Check whether excluded services and other charges remain your responsibility.

How long can short-term coverage last?

Duration depends on current rules, state, issue date, and insurer. Federal enforcement policy has changed, and sources may describe different limits. Get the offered term and renewal provisions in writing; we do not promise a universal three-, twelve-, or thirty-six-month term.

Does a PPO network mean ACA coverage?

No. Network access and insurance benefits are separate features. Confirm the actual coverage type, doctors, hospitals, claim rules, and out-of-network costs.

A quick coverage-gap checklist.

  • What coverage ended, and when?
  • Could a qualifying event open Marketplace enrollment?
  • Which treatments, medications, or planned care must be covered?
  • What could you owe beyond the advertised deductible?
  • What is your coverage plan after this policy expires?
